EWHC: Express Split Showcase Weekend

Walpole, MA  - The Eastern Women’s Hockey Conference had its third showcase this past weekend at the Edge Sports Center in Bedford, MA, where the Express went 2-2 on the weekend.

The girls would come out victorious in their first game against the New Jersey Rockets, with a 3-1 win. Sam Molind scored the first goal for the Express on the power play from Cassidy McNeeley and Kellie Popkin. Cassi Ronan made it 2-0 when she scored a short handed goal from Maddie Scheinberd and Hannah Murphy. The Rockets would get on the board with a breakaway goal, bringing the score to 2-1. Cassi Ronan added her second of the game to make it a 3-1 final. Lily O’Neil was in net for the Express.

The Express played their second game of the day against OHA Tardiff. Maddie Scheinberg began the scoring in the first when she deflected defenseman Sami Barletta’s shot from the point that she received from Cassi Ronan. The Express remained in the lead until about the final 5 minutes of the game when Ashley Stratton from OHA tied the game up. With a minute left in the game, an unfortunate call against the Express led to a power play goal for OHA, giving them a 2-1 win. Lily O’Neil was great in net stopping 33 of 35 shots.

The next day the Express faced OHA Junior, which proved to be another close game. OHA went up 2-0 on the Express in the second period, but the girls would make it 2-1 when Kellie Popkin found Cassidy McNeeley in the slot. The Express had a few 5-on-3 opporunities but could not capitalize. OHA took a 2-1 win.

The Express faced the New Jersey Rockets again for their last game of the showcase. The Rockets got on the board first and held a one goal lead on the Express until late in the third period. Kellie Popkin tied it up at 1-1 when she buried a rebound in front of the net. Maddie Scheinberg added another deflection goal when she tipped Alyssa Murphy’s shot. Megan Gates sealed the game with the empty netter to give the Express a 3-1 win.

“Overall, I was really impressed with how the girls played this weekend. They moved the puck really well and made some great plays,” said Coach Danielle.

The Express head up to Canada this weekend to play two games against HTI and two games against OHA.

“I’m excited to face these teams again. Both games in the showcase were very close and I know that if everyone shows up, we can beat them,” added Coach Danielle.
