EWHC: Barletta, Connor Big Help Up Front

Walpole, MA  - This past weekend a shorthanded Express fell 7-2 to the Northern Cyclones. Playing short meant that the Express would need forward help, leaning on defenseman Sami Barletta and Nicole Connor to play up front for the game.

“Despite our loss, I was extremely proud of Sami and Nicole. We have been short upfront and without hesitation, they stepped up to play forward for me," said Coach Danielle Doherty. "It’s very rewarding as a coach when your players, without question, do anything to help the team. Both Sami and Nicole exceeded my expectations.”

In the Express’ first showcase earlier this year, Nicole Connor had a couple of helpers. Nicole is a quick, speedy, hard working player that really helped the Express produce some offense. Not only did she bring some energy to the offense, she was great in the defensive zone with her defensive mind.

The lone goals in this game would come from Barletta and Maddie Scheinberg. Scheinberg’s first goal of the season will be one to remember, as she walked out of the corner along the goal line and ripped one right above the Cyclones goalie's shoulder.

Barletta’s goal started from Hayley Parrish, who received a breakout pass and skated towards the neutral zone. She fired a pass to Barletta on the far side of the neutral zone, who then made an unbelievable catch around the Cyclones defender. Chased down the wall by the defender, Barletta ripped a shot from the outside which went five hole past the Cyclones goaltender.

“Sami is off to a great start this year. As a true defenseman, she is our second leading scorer on the team. She has been focusing on her foot speed and her shot, and her hard work is definitely paying off,” added Doherty. “It was also great having Nicole up on forward. I know it is not the easiest role to take on and I commend her for playing the role so well.”

The Express will be back to work this week with lots of focus on creating offense. The Express head to Buffalo, NY on Thursday for the Inferno Buffalo Tournament.
