EWHC: Express Participate in First EWHC Showcase

Walpole, MA  - The Express Women's Junior team opened up to the Hockey Training Institute (HTI) for their first game of the first ever EWHC Showcase.  It was a very back and forth first period with solid goaltending from both Lily O’Neil and HTI’s Josee Robinson.  HTI’s Dominika Forejtova snuck one past O’Neil on the power play when she was found back door giving HTI a 1-0 lead after the first period.  Late into the second period, Forejtova found the back of the net again giving HTI a 2-0 lead.  Express responded back right away when Megan Gates was found back door from a tick tack toe play from linemates Cassidy McNeeley and Sam Molind, making it a 2-1 game after two periods.  The Express ran out of gas in the third and could not capitalize on their scoring opportunities.  HTI went on to score 3 unanswered goals, picking up a 5-1 victory over the Express.  O’Neil faced 32 shots.

The Express faced Ontario Hockey Academy Tardiff for their second game of the showcase.  It was a tough start for the Express as OHA went up 2-0 in the first on 2 power play goals. The Express players were a little skate bitten on many scoring chances.  OHA capitalized on their chances and found the back of the net twice in the second period making it 4-0 OHA.  Megan Gates finally snuck one by Denisa Jandova when she picked up Nicole Connor’s rebound in front of the net making it 4-1 OHA after two periods.  OHA’s Ingrid Holstad picked up her third of the game giving OHA a 5-1 lead.  Captain Cassidy McNeeley ended the scoring making it 5-2 OHA when she rifled one top shelf from a take over in the slot from Hannah Murphy.  O’Neil saw 39 shots.

Later on Saturday, the Express played Ontario Hockey Academy Junior for their third game of the showcase.  Walpole and OHA were scoreless after the first.  Naomi Leasck was solid in net for the Express, however the team could not stay out of the box and OHA went up 3-0 after the second on three power play goals.  Defenseman Kiki Docuette got the Express on the board in the third when she rushed the puck into the zone and snuck one close side.  OHA responded back making it 4-1.  Sam Molind closed up the scoring making it a 4-2 final. Leasck faced 35 shots.

Walpole ended their showcase with a victory over the Kunlun Red Star.  Hannah Murphy got the scoring started when she tipped Sarah Zedian’s shot from Hayley Parrish.  Red Star would score a minute later making it a 1-1 game.  The Red Star pressed hard against the Express the entire game and their goaltender was terrific in net.  With two minutes left, the Express were on a 5-on-3 and were able to get one past Han (Sky) Yiyang making it 2-1.

Express head back up to Cyclones Arena this Saturday at 10:15AM to face the Cyclones for the first time this year.
