Walpole, MA - The Express Elite team aimed to go into the Thanksgiving break with some momentum. At the beginning of the week the team sat at 12-6-0, second in the Elite Division of the Eastern Hockey League.
Before the break the Express faced off against the Vermont Lumberjacks and the Northern Cyclones. At the same time, the Boston Jr. Rangers and New Hampshire Monarchs faced off against each other – contests that influenced the Express’ spot in the standings.
Polino was right, as the Express closed the second period up 2-1 with goals from Eric Wright and Jared Balzarini. In the third, the team extended its lead with another goal from Wright. By the end of the game Wright completed his hatrick and lead the Express to a 4-2 victory. The line of Wright, Balzarini and Logan Stark led the way offensively, scoring all four goals and combining for a total of 16 points. Brad Arvanitis stopped 35 of 37 shots in net.
“We expect big things form that line every night,” Polino said. “They are the kind of group other teams have to plan for. The fact they keep producing the way they do is a testament to how hard those three have been working.”
In the second period the Express extended the lead to 4-0 with a hardworking goal from Peter Hereu. In the third Cam Cordio score the lone goal. Arvanitis’ excellent play was rewarded with his second shutout of the season, turning aside all 47 of the Cyclones’ attempts.
The two wins were enough to maintain the Express’ second-place standing (14-6-0, 28 points), and gain ground on the leaders, NH Monarchs, who lost to the Rangers. Wright continues to lead the way in scoring, his 6 points this past weekend moved him into fouth overall in league scoring (31 points) and first in goals scored (18). The team looks to recharge over the holiday before tackling a grueling schedule, playing the Bandits, Monarchs and Rangers with in their next three games.
From everyone on the Express Elite team, Happy Thanksgiving!
