The Walpole Express continued to roll this past weekend as
they swept the Laconia Leafs out of Walpole with two convincing
wins of 7-2 on Saturday and 9-1 on Sunday. “We were
really good this weekend," said Coach Mark Kumpel. "Laconia
battles hard and they make you work for everything you get.
I thought our kids played our systems excellently and it showed
on the scoreboard.”
The
Express got things going early on Saturday night by opening
up the scoring just four minutes into the game on a rebound
goal from Austin Grosvenor assisted by Joey Bonnaci and Cody
Armstrong. Will Harrop extended the lead with his first Jr.
A goal while shorthanded when he roofed a Ryan Eaker rebound
home. Armstrong then put the Express up by three when he took
a Matt Harrington feed from behind the net. In the second,
Walpole again came out firing, adding two more goals. Chris
Comprosky sent a point shot top shelf for the forth goal assisted
by Steve Charest and Charest went on to tally the fifth goal
when he beat the Laconia netminder short side off a low give-and-go
play from Lou Malvasi. Matt Venoit and Ben Oskroba added power
play strikes in the third to close out the scoring. Derek
Kump stood tall in net making 23 saves for his 12th win of
the season.
On Sunday, Walpole was as hot as their Saturday finish, hitting
the back of the net four times in the first and four more
time again in the second to rack up a score of 8-0 before
Laconia netted a power play goal early in the third. Oskroba
led the charge with his first career hat trick. Grosvenor,
Venoit, Charest and Malvasi also added goals. Troy Polino
contributed a late third-period goal to close out the scoring
for Walpole. Zach Andrews was solid when called upon making
11 saves in net.
The Express now focus on the final weekend before Holiday
break when the team hosts the Portland Jr. Pirates on Friday
evening at 8:30 pm at Iorio Arena. On Saturday, the Express
head to Hudson, N.H. for a showdown with the Northern Cyclones,
their rival and closest opposition for the top spot in the
AJHL North division. “We have a tough weekend ahead
of us," said Coach Tony Dalessio. "Portland took
it to us last time we played, we can’t look beyond Friday
night.”
