Express
Shutout Jr Pirates
Pink Game
Sunday at 1:00PM vs Hartford
|
| (Walpole, MA) -- The Walpole Express
Jr. A team swept a home-and-home series against the Portland
Jr. Pirates this weekend on the strength of perfect goaltending
and stingy defense. Zach Andrews and Derek Kump continued to
prove why they are two of the top goaltenders in the AJHL and
the team as a whole improved upon the league's best 15-goal-against
over the first 12 games.
"We have played to our strengths over the past two weekends,"
said Coach Tony Dalessio. "We had some tough games last
weekend first with the Cyclones, holding them down to only
two power play goals, and then with the high-scoring Bulldogs,
also holding them to two goals. This weekend we gave up nothing."
Here's how it went. On Friday, the Express played host to
the Pirates at the new Youth and Community Center in Hyannis,
Mass. Lou Malvasi got things off to a fast start
for the Express with his goal at 12:46 of the first period.
Walpole continued to swarm the Portland net through
the remainder of the first and second periods but were turned
away by some excellent goaltending by the Pirates' Danny Green
(45 saves). Ben Oskroba eventually opened things up
for the Express five minutes into the third, taking a backdoor
pass from Matt Venoit to make it 2-0. DJ Dinnison added an
empty net goal to close out the scoring. Zach Andrews
stopped all 21 shots he faced for the win in net.
On Saturday, the scene shifted to the MHG Ice Center in Saco,
Maine were the Express wasted little time getting things going
offensively. Ed Rohaly and Jide Idowu each notched their
first goals of the season as the Express lead 2-0 after
the first period. Austin Grosvenor (1 goal, 2 assists)
put the Express up 3-0 halfway through the second. In the
third, Dinnison, Matt Harrington (1 goal, 1 assist) and Oskroba
(1 goal, 1 assist) put the finishing touches on the scoring
and the weekend. Making the start in his home state, Derek
Kump stopped all 23 shots to notch another win.
The Express are now focused on a full week of practice before
the team hosts the Hartford Jr Wolf Pack this upcoming
weekend. Saturday's puck drop is at 8:30 pm at Iorio Arena.
"We are looking forward to this weekend," said Coach
Mark Kumpel. "Hartford his playing like the tough team
we expected they would be going into the season. We have our
work cut out for us."
On Sunday, the Express again
host the Wolf Pack, this time for the first annual "Pink
Game" in support of breast cancer research. All
proceeds from the game will go to the Avon Foundation for
Breast Cancer in honor of Amy O’Connell Keith. The
puck drops at 1:00 pm at Iorio Arena. |
