(Walpole, MA) -- The Walpole Express
Jr. B team continued to pile on the points with two more wins
this past weekend. The team swept the series with the New Jersey
Renegades in impressive fashion -- 5-2 on Saturday and 11-4
on Sunday. On Saturday night the Express got a natural hat trick
from Shamus
Foster to open up a 3-1 lead through two periods. In the
third, Chris
Tully scored from the point, recording his is first goal
of the season, and John
Sheehan notched his fifth goal of the season, equaling his
total for all last season. Brendan
Hammatt was solid in net making 17 saves for the win.
On Sunday, the Walpole offense was in full force as the boys
posted 11 goals, including a hat trick from Carmen Mastrangelo
(two assists). Sheehan, Tully, Chris
Galanis, Aaron
Gonzales, Will
Harrop (three assists), Donovan
Minutolo, Jake
Domos and Mike Knox all hit the back of the Renegades net.
For Knox it was the first of the season. Kevin
Hanlon added three assists while JD
Rassett, Kevin
Zipkin and Thomas
Nitsche each contributed two. Hammatt and TJ
Thornton split the duties in net for the win.
Looking Ahead
The Express lead the MJHL Francis Division with a 6-1-0-2 record
and 14 points. Next up is the joint AJHL/MJHL Showcase in Hudson,
NH this weekend. The Express will face the Philadelphia Little
Flyers on Friday, Central Penn Panthers on Saturday, and Space
Coast Hurricanes on Sunday. Saturday’s game against Central
Penn will be the first meeting between Express Jr. B Head Coach
Mike Tenney and his mentor, Central Penn Head Coach Andy Scott.
Tenney was the assistant coach for Central Penn for two seasons
before joining the Express this fall. Central Penn currently
leads the MJHL Dowd Division with a 6-0-0-0 record and are the
defending Keegan Cup champions.
“I know Saturday's game is going to be special for both
Mike and Andy," said Express GM Tony Dalessio. "They
have a very close relationship and I know Andy is excited and
proud of the job Mike has done so far here in Walpole. Our games
are always meaningful as we have a great affiliation relationship
with Central Penn and we are proud of the three former CPenn
players on our AJHL roster.”
The A Team
The Express Jr. A team will also participate in the joint showcase
in Hudson this upcoming weekend. The A's look to keep their
regular season loss column blank when they take on the Philadelphia
Little Flyers on Friday, New York Bobcats on Saturday and Philadelphia
Jr. Flyers on Sunday. The Express are coming off a messy 2-1
OT win at Hartford last Wednesday. “If we are going to
succeed this weekend we need to clean up our defensive zone
and finish our chances offensively,” said Head Coach Mark
Kumpel. The Jr. A team will play the home opener against the
Northern Cyclones at Iorio Arena on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8:30
pm. |
